Nobody is certain how the statuette got its name. The best-accepted versions is that the Academy librarian Margaret Herrick, thought it resembled her Uncle Oscar and said in the presence of a newspaper reporter who immediately used the description in his column. The Academy itself didn't use the nickname officially until 1939.
