How do the gas and electric companies compete against each other. How can your gas be supplied by British Gas one day and Scottish Power the next? If it all comes down the same pipe/cables How does this happen?

What you consume may well be gas piped in by another producer but the nett effect is that you consume 'x' KWH of gas charged to you by your supplier. Electricity is the same but its quality doesn't vary so wherever a producer's electricity is fed into the grid doesn't matter as it all goes towards the national load.
