How to dispose of storage heaters?

I have just removed storage heaters from my house. Some I could get in to the car and take to the dump, but I'm left with 3 large heaters that I just can't move. Myself and a mate (neither of us complete nambys) have tried to lift them into his van but can't move them.

Is there any precaution I need to take if I break them up in order to remove the "bricks" inside? They are probably early-mid 70's so I'm wondering about asbestos or anything equally sinister.
Any help much appreciated.

Do not attempt to break up or dismantle.

Contact your local environmental health officer at the local council and ask for advice. Many councils (if not all) offer a Hazardous waste collection/disposal free of charge for small amounts, even though they weigh a ton the actual asbestos will be small.

i have read the others answers and i think going with the ones i had there is fibreglass in them so be careful

Have been in touch with the council for the "hazardous waste collection service". Had to leave a message the other day - heard nothing yet. I hope they'll be a bit more responsive when I tell them about the barrell of radium I keep in the larder!

In response to Bushbaby - you wont die instantly from asbestos poisoning but you do have plenty of time to read up on it. Good Luck
