I seem to recall in those days people saying they'd give it up if a packet went above �1.

I can remember the "give up when they go over a pound" days very clearly and I'm pretty sure that was 1983/84 so in 1977 they'd have been considerably less. Doesn't answer your question, but it's a step on the way :)

i can remember going out on a fiver and that got me 3 pints of cider and a pack of 20 and that was in late 88/89!

Dont know about 1977 but I packed in smoking in 72 I've alway rembered paying 50p for a pint of beer & 20 embassy
with the beer costing about 12p

2d old pence for five. That would be about 1930. Just thought you might be interested

I can remember being able to buy 10 sovereign or 10 number 10 for 9 and half pence, for half pence you could buy a book of matches. thats what my 10pence lunch money for school, went on. that was the 70s
