Greetings each!
Can anyone please provide any info on this song which, apparently was written by someone called Hoffman, and might have been sung by Danny Kaye or Max Bygraves?
The first verse runs as:
"Early in the morning,
When I'm still asleep:
Comes a little chirpin',
Comes a little peep:
From a tiny birdie,
With a funny name:
It's the...........................
....................................."

There appears to be no information on this song available anywhere, although I still have an excellent rendition of it on a 45rpm single by Peter Maxwell, International Pianist/Entertainer.
Cheers.
Mike.

in the UK, a recorded version was released by Don Lang & His Frantic Five.

This was a bit of a novelty song from the mid 50s (?), there were various renditions of it, one of which was by Max Bygraves as you state, but I think that the big hit version was by Rosemary Clooney (mother of George).  The song is, I think, about a serviceman in the occupation forces in Germany who is having a nice snooze and dreaming about his girlfriend back home, when he is rudely awakened by the bugle being blown at morning reveille. He gives the bugle call a name and personality, in nonsense German (he may well have been picking up a bit of the language while he was out there).  As near as I can make out, the chorus is as follows:

"Es war eine kleine fliegel Flugel, Ausgewachene biegel Bugel, Ohrgesplittner lauter Boomer bird".

Which roughly translated means:

"It was a liitle birdie, A wake-up bugle call, An ear-splittingly loud Boomer bird".

This isn't all grammatically correct German and you won't find some of the words in the dictionary (I think) but it's sound-alike language and may have been based on US Army slang.

There is a modern version on Youtube.  It won't let me paste the link but search for "eine kleine fliegel flugel bird" performed by Pete Skinner.
