Remember a few years ago, three whales became trapped under the Arctic ice, sparking off an international attempt to free them? The press claimed that the whales had been given names by those trying to rescue them. Can anyone remember the names?

Do you mean the three Californian grey whales that were trapped under the ice for three weeks until being freed by Eskimos and Russians? If so, it happened way back in 1988. The three were called Crossbeak, Bonnet and Bone, although, sadly, Bone, the smallest and weakest of the trio, died before the Russians were able to smash open the ice, which set the other two free.
