How much is the yellow fever jab and malaria tablets?

I'm due to go to the Gambia in Jan 2006 and wanted to know roughly how much it would be to have a yellow fever vaccination and malaria tablets. Any info would be greatly appreciated

Your vaccination should be free - ask at your GP

You will need to get the malaria tablets on prescription - about �6.50 if you pay for them

Some people recommend malarone for malaria, which costs a lot more as it's not available on prescription.

I have just had the yellow fever jab and it cost �35.  as for malaria tablets it all depends where you are going as to what you have to have.  Malarone are the best as the others have side effects such as hallucinations or sensitivity to sunlight.  Malarone however are only available on prescription and cost around �50 but shop around as chemists charge different prices.

I have just had the yellow fever jab and it cost �35. You can only have it in certain practices or schools of tropical medicine.  If your doc doesnt do it then there will probably be another practice in your area that does. You dont have to be registered with them in order to have it.

The type of malaria tablets you need depends where you are going.  Malarone are the best but are only available on prescription.  Other types like Mefloquin can cause hallucinations or sensitivity to sunlight.  Malarone are about �50 for a course of 22 tablets but again it depends on how long are going for and shop around as each chemist charges different prices.  I need 22 and the cheapest I have found are �41.

If your GP isn't registered to give a Yellow Fever vac he will tell you the nearest practice. - you don't have to be a patient there. It is usually around �40. As for malaria the best person to ask is a pharmacist. They won't try to sell you Malarone just because it's more expensive. Not all holiday vacs are free, they're just far too expensive for the NHS - critical care meds are more important. Not on a soapbox just want you to realise why. x
