Flies...........

Hi there,

My son (7) who is Autistic is scared of flies. And by that i mean all flying things, so as you can imagine now the warmer weather is here it's a nightmare.

Does anyone know of any websites that will educate him from a kids point of view to show that they're not all bad. Haven't found any so far.

Can't help on the website unfortunately but does that mean you have not tried showing him how and then encouraging him to fly a kite?

My Godson (3) seemed to like me briefly flying it in his garden but will try it out fully in the park later this week, although he exhibits a milder reaction to such things.

It's not about flying insects, but there was a kids TV series, brought out on video (don't know about DVD) called Spider, which was about a little boy who was frightened of spiders. Through the episodes he got to know 'spider' who eventually became his best friend. My boys loved the stories when they were younger.

How about getting him a bug catcher...available from Lakeland ltd. It's like a bug vacuume cleaner & you can suck up the creature that's bothering you & deposit it outside without getting anywhere near it.

Just an idea anyway.

We got some caterpillars from a website called insectlore for our daughter. You also buy a net cage to keep them in and you watch as they grow and then become cocoons and finally hatch into painted lady butterflies after a couple of weeks. That may be a bit much but my wife said that it was a really good website with alot of info about beasties. Alot of schools use it apparently.

i can't help you there, i had a traumatic experience involving flies when i was little, and to this day (i'm 36 now) i can't abide flying insects and once even had a panic attack whilst driving because there were loads of them outside the car.

what's nice to say about flies anyway, they are disgusting creatures.

the only thing i can suggest is if you buy him a little bug investigating kit and try to avoid any traumas connected with insects (as he will educate himself by coming familiar with them up close and he may well associate flies the same way).

Insectlore must have a British distribution because I live in Scotland and had no bother with them posting and also my wife and daughters schools got various things from them.

Hi Sian, Sorry it's me again I'm beginning to feel like a sales rep for insectlore. I remember that I phoned them to order the stuff for our daughter. I spoke to an American but she was somewhere in the UK cos I was a bit suss about sending anything live all the way from the US and she assured me she was in England. Sorry to go on but the butterflies have just emerged and my daughter is very pleased indeed.
