Traffic delays between Cheshire & Whitby . Aug 21st & 29th

Driving to N Yorkshire tomorrow, returning Sat 29th Aug. Are there any road works or Bank Holiday events that we should detour to avoid? One year there was an Air Show near Leeds and warnings of long delays.

We would use M62, M1, A1M. A64 round York, A169 through Pickering unless there was good reason to do otherwise.

Hi there.
I live in Whitby and can tell you that traffic into town from all routes is pretty horrendous right now. This weekend is a double whammy - the start of Whitby Regatta AND the start of Folk Week.. as well as the usual influx of regular tourists, caravans etc.
I went to York yesterday and the journey home should have taken me an hour but took 2.5 hours.
I know this isn't much help, but part of the A64 (from the roundabout after York racecourse) is going to be closed from 6pm either tonight or tomorrow night (I didn't pay that much attention to the signs).
Have a good time...when you eventually get here! lol

We are aiming for the Folk Week. I see York races are on, so maybe multimap's route, up the A1(M) to the A19, almost to Teesside, then east on the A171 would be better.

Odd that Google says going via Pickering, 153m and 3hr 8min is best, while Multimap offers 174miles, 3hrs 46mins as the quickest.

Anyone know any reason not to use multimap's route.
There's nothing on http://www.trafficengland.com/trafficalerts.as px, but then they don't mention York races either.
