Birds - sh** where they eat?

How can I discourage birds from sitting on the aerials above my patio and poo-ing all over me, my garden furniture and anything else in the vicinity?! 

I wondered about strategically placing a bird feeder on the area that they seem to be targetting thinking that they might not sh** where they eat - is that urban myth or might it work?   Any other suggestions would be very welcome.

a windchime, or something sparkly that moves with the wind will keep them away.

I also heard that an airport kept seagulls off the runway by playing 'Hey Big Spender' sung by Cilla Black I think.

It is an urban myth, you only have to look at the state of our bird tables to see that. By the way, it was Shirley Bassey.  Judy
