Retrieving belongings from an Ex-partner (boyfriend)

Where do I stand legally with regards to retrieving personal belongings from an ex-boyfriend.

We split up about 18 months ago, it was a very dysfunctional relationship which meant I had to leave quickly and promptly and therefore was unable to take all my belongings with me.

I am now married and expecting a baby in one months time, I have tried on many occasions to ask for items back but to no avail. My ex is NOT denying that the items are mine, neither is he saying I can't have them back, but he expects me to go and sort through his belongings aswell and due to the nature of the relationship I am unable to do this, to visit him or sort through the items. Many risks would be involved.

I have asked him to "bag-up" items for a third party to collect and he keeps saying this is fine but then backs out at the last minute.

I have been asking for the return of these belongings from about a month after i left.

Where do I stand if I wanted to take this further, I understand that it would be a civil matter. Any advice gratefully received :-)

PS There is no police or court record to prove this was a dysfunctional relationship. However there could be SEVERE legal implications for my ex.

Also I have emails to prove that said items are mine, emails from my ex.

What sort of items does he have of yours?? Just thinking if its not anything of great importance I would just forget about it.
