Over the years I have used several ways to discourage salesmen/ women After picking up the phone and hearing We are doing a survey,I tell them one of the kids has a pair of pliers in his hand,"Get away from that phone wire with that pair of pliers" then the phone goes dead. In the street Je ne parle pas anglais usually works except for linguaphone reps. Credit card reps are usually stopped in their tracks with Sorry love where I come from we keep us brass undert mattress and when it runs out we starve. These are becoming tedious,Im sure theyre cottoning on to me. lets have some more suggestions. What about some answers to the questions they ask like,"Do you want to help alcoholics with their drinking etc? Or " Do you want to help dig a well in Africa.

Say "No thyank you".

Walk away, or ring off.
Just put the phone down but leave it of the hook and let them talk to themselves.
lol I am lucky enough never to get those calls tho I like the advert where the woman says "please hold your call is important to us" and walks away and leaves a kids musical toy playing lol
My friend plays dumb with them. Every time they give him a bit of information he comes out with something like, "oh, a survey, eh? What's that then?" They explain, he picks up another little bit of what they're saying, and off he goes again.

They usually hang up first.
I just say "sorry I dont give personal details out" or " I am not interested" hang up, Im not going to the trouble of making up something to get rid of them. I always give the same answers
don't be nasty.......you wouldn't like their job.....
do you also like traffic wardens craft?
Im with cazz, I dont see the point of the rest of you fraffing about letting them listen to toys etc....when all you have to say is "Sorry im really busy at the moment, but good luck with your next sale "" And then put the phone down!
weeal we don't have any traffic wardens in York........

Oh dear what a serious lot you all are !
they are funny if they happen once in a blue moon celery, but not so amusing if you get 4 or 5 calls a day asking you to buy crap
lol
congratulations celeryman.......you're the first person to ever say that about ChatterBankers.....
Try registering your phone number with the telephone preference service and get your number taken off databases. Worked for me, not 100% but I get less calls now.
put the tv on and then they natter on to that ...
it does work !!!
put on your bestest grandma or grandad voice and say "ooh, you really need to talk to my son" - then hand the phone to your 2 year old!
for withheld numbers I press mute and leave them rambling for 10mins.

Its that bad on the telly tonight that were watching please sir the movie, the school kids all look about 40. Anyone else old enough to remember it? Frightening thing is Miss ewell is starting to look young!!!!!!!!!!!
I had a salesperson stop me in the high street and ask if I wanted to save money on my electricity bill. I just told him money was no object to me and he didn't know what to say, so I walked on.
Another one is to just say you are already with the company who are talking to you / calling you.
