help with new modem

just received a new modem from virgin ,,now this one dosn't have a usb connector ,it has a ethernet connector.as i share this connection with my wife . i was wondering if there is a ethernet splitter ,i could bye enabling both of us to share the internet ..

An ethernet splitter is called a router.

You need to buy a router, but if you are on CABLE with virgin you need a cable router

Actually I would say you will need a router, a switch is for connecting computers together, a router is for connecting several computers to the same internet connection.

The virgin modem only passes one IP address from the ethernet port, this sinlge IP can not be shared by multiple computers through a switch.

quite why you say you didn't want to get a router tommy39 is beyond me, that is excatly what you do need.

if you don't want wireless then it can be turned off.

we've used ethernet modems a few times - (I think it's netgear) they support all the protocols - just the hardware (or lack of) that makes them cheap - we generally bung a 25 port unmanaged on it ... and if required a wap.

maybe I'm leading feet first - the virgin site says all connections get a router ....

thank's for the help folk's. went to the local pc store yesterday and i do need to go the router way ...chuck the reason i didn't want to go the router way is because the usb modem we have been using is so easy to manage ,just a ethernet cable from my pc to my wifes laptop, work's great and easy to set-up.again thank's for the help most appreciated
