Personal Planetariums - How effective are they?

I recently saw an advert for a personal planetarium , which claimed that it can identify the star that you have the unit pointed towards using GPS. ( I presume the GPS works out where you are then calculates the angle you are holding the unit at ? )

Question - are they effective at identifying stars ? If so I would be interested in getting one - would be very helpful if anyone could recommend one.

Amazon (US) has 131 reviews. 99 of those awarded the Celestron Sky Scout Personal Planetarium (which I assume that you're referring to) either 4 or 5 stars (out of a possible 5) but there are a significant number of people who've only awarded 3, 2 or even 1 stars.
