Yucca Propagation.

I have Yucca with several offshoots. I would like to propagate to increase my Yucca population......Methods please.......Jeff

There are several varieties of Yucca, however, most all can be propagated from the shoots you mention.  Short shoots can usually be taken off of the old stems in the spring and summer. Pot these shoots individually in containers or in a propagating bed in a warm, closed frame where they will form roots quickly. Shoots can also be detached from the base of old plants. (Source - Botany World).  It's been my personal experience that bedding these in damp sand will hasten the root formation.

I was also wanting to know if it is possible to propagate the flowering shoot from my yucca.  The plant is about 7ft at present. The shoot seems to be coming from the centre but lying to the side, not straight up.  The flowering branches have lots of buds.  I would be grateful if you could guide me what to do next.  I did not notice it flower last year. It would be very exciting if I was able to nurture my own yucca.  Many thanks

staceym1, Cut the head from the branch just a few inches below the lower leaves and remove a few of the lower leaves before inserting the flowering cutting in a pot of soil. Loosely tie the leaves together in an upright position and place the plant in a warm, sunny place, (greenhouse is best) where roots should form in a few weeks.  Transplant to final area or pot when roots are well established.  Water, but sparingly...
Yuccas should be grown in a hot, dry site in well-drained soil in full sun.  If the dead leaves do not fall off, they should be cut off once or twice a year...

There are over 40 different varieties of this plant... Some reach nearly 40 feet in heigth... Luck!
