Wouldn't want to live there, but was what I needed, with a 24 supermarket 2 minutes away for supplies
Anyone recommending the Strand Palace needs a good talking too. The Waldorf is ok, but expensive. Thistle at Charing Cross is souless (but you don't need a soul for a night). Hilton at Trafalgar Sq is what I would imagine an Eastern European brothel in 1975 would look like.

I'm just back from London - stayed in Astor Court Hotel, Hallem Street in London - which is just about 5 minute stroll from Oxford Circus (behind BBC). This is a quaint hotel - not luxurious - would be slightly dated - enamel baths etc. but it is clean and convenient and is situated in a quiet area - safe to return to at night. This is my second time staying at the hotel and would defo use it again. Rooms are a good size for London.
Would also recommend Fat Tire Bike Tour (look under Trip Advisor for reviews) - great way to spend four hours - if you can ride a bike you could do this easily. Hope this helps.
