nano ipod

I have just bought a new nano ipod when I try to sync music ,it is asking me to conect the device it is connected what am i doing wrong I have followed all the instructions but I am missing something and i dont know what???

Is it connected direct to the computer, not via a hub or other device?

Have you tried restarting the computer, and opening iTunes, then connecting the iPod to a different USB port?

Which version of Windows do you have?
