What can an old landlord claim for without having any copy of a contract?
Hi my girlfriend has a problem with her previous landlady and im hoping someone here can help!!
She had a falling out with a live in landlady who then served her with a one week notice period!! Since my girlfriend didn\'t have a copy of the contract, she was worried and moved out straight away. I wasn\'t sure this was a legal period of notice for a start, and asked the landlady to produce the contract. She refused saying she didn\'t have a copy!! I was outraged by this but my girlfriend just wanted to leave it in the past so left it be.
We thought this was all behind us but now her old landlady is sending her through huge claims for bills my girlfriend had already paid to her, in cash with no reciept, unfortunately, also threatening court action and including the court costs!!!!!
My girlfriends old landlady has no copy of the original contract, with this in mind is my girlfriend liable for any of these bills??????
I hope someone can help as my girlfriend is in a right mess over this, thanks,
Richard

your girlfriend had a right to a minimum of 4 weeks notice to quit a property so the notice period was illegal. tell the landlady to get stuffed and add that she will have to drag you through the courts kicking a screaming before she gets a penny - that should put her off! make sure you also keep all correspondance and make a note of times/dates of notice, demands for money and phonecalls. you may also be able to show that she has been harrasing your girlfriend, which will not do her case any good. Good luck x
