Neighbours Trees

The end of my neighbours garden abutts the side of my house. To hide as much of my side wall from his view he has planted Leylandii hedges some years ago which are now about 12 feet plus high and touch my building cutting out light from two windows. There is a mere 6 foot between his leylandii and my side wall. In addition he has what I think are ash trees about 25 foot high which are no more than 12 feet from the corner of the front of my house and branches are touching my gutters. We have no contact together plus he is is a lawyer so I don't want to approach him about this in the wrong way. Any suggestions?

The relevant legislation only applies to evergreen hedges. (i.e. it doesn't cover individual trees and it doesn't cover deciduous hedges). But it does give you the right to involve your local council if there's no other way to get the height of the Leylandii reduced. You have to pay a fee to seek a council order to get the hedge cut back. (There's no automatic right to such an order; the council consider each case upon its merits).
