there's a button on my cars gear change thing, it's an automatic car, which if you press in a little light on the pannel lights up: 'OD'. When should i have this selected?

Overdrive is good when you are cruising at a consistent higher speed rather than in stop-and-go traffic. OD lets your engine move into a higher gear so that the RPM reduces and your engine isn't working as hard. That saves gas mileage.

Only turn it off when descending a steep hill to give you some extra engine braking.
