slate will split.
shale is a loose type of rock.

in fact it could be either- sshale is formed by successive layers of clay laid down and thus will split into layerd. Slate is a metamorphosised shale and hence also splits easilt into layers. Take your piick......though I would guess that more people are familiar with slate
