I have breakfast most mornings with a man and his wife, he being 89yrs old and she being 85yrs old, both bright and alert.
He was in WW2 in the R.A.F flying Blenheim aircraft with Coastal Command and when the German battlleship Scharnhorst and pocket battleship Prinz Eugen, surrounded by seven destroyers and a flotilla of 70 support vessels, made the famous Channel dash in broad daylight, his was one of the squadrons orderded to intercept the armada.
My point: …..they do not smoke, they have been married for 65yrs and are a pleasure to talk too.
Yesterday, at breakfast, they had a sort of family reunion and mrs sqad and I were invited to join them.
Son…smoked incessantly and had been married and divorced three times.
Daughter….smoked incessantly and had been married twice.
Granddaughter (1) smoked incessantly, had a child with an unnamed man and was co habiting with another man.
Granddaughter (2).Smoked incessantly, hair looked unwashed, ring in nose and 6 months pregnant.
Backtracking slightly, if the son and daughter have been brought up in an RAF environment they maybe felt the need to not conform in later life, if their father was an officer maybe they went to boarding school and so there could be very deep reasons that they have lived their life in such a contrast to their parents. Only a random guess though.
I was told by my 12 year old this morning that her generation don't watch everything they say to each other like my generation - that they don't take offence as much. She could buy and sell me
My 10 year old grandson asked me a few things today:
Was I alive when shakespeare was.
Was i alive when Jimiu Hendrix was.
Was George Best the best footballer ever.
(they are doing the 1960s in history and shakespeare in english)
he also said he only realised he was alive when he was 6.
After abit of discussion he means he can only remember being 6 years old onwards!!
