Hello. I'm thinking of buying a deep frier and would appreciate opinions from people who are familiar with them as to what to consider before I choose one. For some reason I'm leaning towards the George Foreman one. Thanks.

Thanks, redman41. An interesting site; I got a few pointers by reading some reviews.
Hi stewey,
depending what you want to cook, have you considered a halogen oven? Versatile/ healthier & easier to clean too!

Sachs, I've never heard of those, so I Googled 'halogen ovens' and most of the sites that came up are in the UK. I guess they're not popular in Ontario. Deep fryers are pretty well universal, so that's why I asked for opinions on them on this site even though I don't live in the UK. But, thanks for your interest.
stewey I live by myself and bought a DeLonghi deep fryer............it was so good that in 3 months I put on a stone in weight............I threw it out.....
Stewey - dont lean towards them, lean away - they burn - sorry ..............

Not bad, peri:) Craft, actually I wouldn't mind putting a little weight on. The George Forman model is supposed to spin off most of the fat after the food is cooked.
I just use an ordinary big pot and put oil in it - and then sieve out the oil when its cold into an empty bottle. That would save you buying another gadget.
I used to do that Jeni when I fried stuff years ago. And then I nearly set the house alight and I haven't deep fried anything again since!!

I rarely fry, let alone deep fry. What sort of things need deep frying? Genuine question.

One food I wouldn't try to deep fry would be Mars Bars:)
Oh Yuk, I can't stand Mars Bars let alone deep fried ones!!
Chips....
If you buy one try to get one with an actual temperature readout. On some cheaper models the indicated temperature on the heat setting knob can be very inaccurate. I once had one where the actual temperature was 20°C less than the indicated setting.
Don't eat chips ummmm - well once in a blue moon and then they are the chunky oven variety!! We are not chip fans.

How about chicken, onion-rings, zucchini, mushrooms, cauliflower etc. All very tasty.
All lovely foods, but I wouldn't deep fry any of them!!
I've got the Delonghi Rotofry which is healthier as the basket is on an angle so its only in the oil half the time, if you see what I mean. It also has a hose to make draining the oil easier. I've had it a few years and am really chuffed with it.
