Like others say, give them a couple of hot washes and don't use fabric conditioner. (It effectively puts a layer of plastic on the fibres). Ordinary cheap cotton tea towels can have cotton oil in the thread. This is hard to get rid of and prevents the towel from absorbing the water when you're trying to dry something. Avoid like the plague any that say to 'Pull into shape after washing'. They're cheap rubbish.
