Cats are pack animals in the wild, and members of the same pack will rub against each other to deposit, and pick up, each other's scents, so they can easily identify each other in a pack situation. Domestic cats see their owners as the dominant pack member, so the same behaviour patterns apply. Cats also have scent glands in their faces, which they rub on furniture, again to deposit their scent and mark their territory.
Cats are most certainly NOT pack animals in the wild - lions are the only exception to this.
