if you go and look at an item can you still bid on line for it ?
As you can go to an auction house and view or do it on the
net , just wanted to know , as I would think a lot of you use
ebay ??

Course you can, and that is the proper way to do it. You can cheat the system though and offer the amount you want to pay if the seller accepts your offer there and then.
Don't expect every seller to allow you to view though. That is usually acceptable with cars or very expensive jewellery and furniture, but not everything.

Some people on ebay leave a fone number so you can see the item before
you bid on line , so if you view the item can you still bid in the auction .

hc 4361 thanks for that answer ...as I looked at an item today and my offer
was not accepted , so started bidding and the item was withdrawn so I
thought you couldn't do both .
I suspect somebody viewed it and they did a private deal. Against eBay rules, but nothing you can do about it.
