adsl routers

hi all got myself adsl wireless router, going cheap. was wandering if i could set it up for use with my cable modem. stevie

Not as far as I am aware.

ADSL routers tend to have the modem and router combined in the one box.

Cable (Virgin) have a separate modem and router (a cable router does NOT include the modem) so you need the cable modem supplied by Virgin with a "cable" router.

I always guessed that using a cable connection with and ADSL router would work, but using an ADSL connection with a cable router wouldn't. For the reasons VHG mentioned.

ADSL routers tend to be more expensive because they have to be able to communicate with a phoneline, whereas cable routers have that done for them. Surely if the ADSL router has an ethernet input then it would work? Since the output of a cable modem is basic PC network speak, couldn't you just attach it to the ADSL router as if you were using it, as, well, a router?

But is it? I always assumed that if you were supplied with a modem and no router, the modem was connected via USB.

Actually you can make it work, but it's not easy and has endless problems for security and for routing bleedover that I really wouldn't advise doing it! (so, of course that's just what I done when I first had Virgin cable :))

Cable routers are a lot cheaper than ADSL ones, far easier to get a proper cable router.

It's not. You CAN connect with USB but companies like Virgin actually go out of their way to recommend that you connect via Ethernet. I had Virgin installed a few months ago, and their little cable modem's default output is via ethernet, so you'd basically just plug it straight into your PC's network card.

Chuck's tried it though, so fair play.
