Ah morecowbell, there is relevance ! Indian money did have pictures of animals on it. That's where monkey , to mean £500 came from, as did pony for £25. Their pictures appeared on Indian money showing those figures and British soldiers in India humorously took the idea into their slang and then used the slang back home in England.
