what are bt'us?
BTU is british thermal unit - a unit of heat energy.

I remember from physics that W=V x I where Power is W (in Watts), V is voltage in Volts and I is current in amps. Likewise V=IR where R is Resistance in Ohms. Not sure about BTUs formulae though
The simple formula (Ohm's Law) is that Watts=VoltagexCurrent(Amps). A Watt is a unit of power and is equivalent to one Joule per second . A Joule is a unit of Work defined as the work performed by applying a constant force of one Newton to an object and moving it one metre. A Newton is the force required to give a mass of 1kg an acceleration of 1metre/second/second . Clear so far ? Good, then to convert Watts to BTU's per hour all you do is multiply the number of Watts by a constant of 3.41. A BTU is the amount of energy necessary to raise the temperature of 1lb of water from 58.5 degrees Fahrenheit to 59.5 degrees. Good Luck
Good answers so far. Just to add for the metrically minded that 1 joule is the energy needed to raise the temperature of 1kg (1000g) of water by one degree.

is a joule a metric or imperial measurement. One of you must be wrong . Because ther is no direct correlation between a pint and a litre
Brian,

Technically a joule is a International Standard (SI) unit. But you can call it metric. And there is a direct correlation between a pint and a litre: there are 1.760 pints in a litre. The definition of a joule (newton metre) is as DSG said. The definition of a calorie is the amount of energy required to to raise one gram of pure water 1 degree celsius (from 14.5C to 15.5C exactly). As there are 4.184 calories in a joule Gef's answer is not completely correct, but fairly near. Sorry to be picky.

Andy

Andromeda is not being picky - I just typed joule instead of calorie so my answer was nonsense. However, please remember that the calories quoted on food packaging are actually kilocalories or Calories.
