3 dn: Would harsh sound heard identify the bird? (8) I think it is woodruff but I can only find reference to a plant of that name. Any birders out there?
I'm sure it's the right answer, and I think it's an error in the clue. Probably thinking of woodchat, woodlark or woodwale, but the crossing letters are certainly W-O-R-F-, so I have a feeling it's a blunder
Another illustration of the falling standards of the Times crosswords, recently. Did you notice that 28 across answer was CLEANSE, clue being: 28. Breaking seal can remove dirt (7) nearly an anagram of SEAL CAN, but not quite right. It's a bit annoying.
