Lambs kidneys - how many?

This might be a bit of a daft question but how many kidneys does a lamb have? We purchased some from the abattoir for the first time and there must have been a total of 8 all joined together in 2s by an intact extremely thick connective tissue/gristle. I can't imagine how the butcher would have joined them together another way.
