My daughter is wanting a tattoo like all her friends. She is 16, nearly seventeen. What I want to know is......... What age can she legally have one done? Is it sixteen with my consent and 18 without? or is it 18 full stop? Ive been trying to talk her out of it but she is determined. Many thanks.

18 full stop. Under the Tattooing of Minors Act 1969, it is a criminal offence to tattoo anyone under the age of 18 years.
Yes, its 18. My daughter had one when she turned 18. With very careful guidance it went from a big one on her neck ot shoulder argh!! to a small one on the lower right hand side of her back. She designed it herself and its very simple and pretty. I pointed out how it would look in a wedding dress, ball gown, in business etc. You wont be able to stop but you can try and guide. Good luck!!
As hc has already said, it's 18 and no tattooist will do it without ID to confirm this, so you're safe for a couple of years :-)

Like you my eldest daughter from 16 nagged and nagged and nagged for one. For her 18th I promised i'd pay for one. She went in all full of bravado and left a gibbering wreak with the smallest tattoo in the world on her hip which she refused to have coloured in, as she found it that painful. It's put her off for life...heh.
Just a question; are these tattoos that teenagers are getting permanent or do they wear off? I've heard of people getting henna tattoos for their holidays.
i have 3 didnt have my 1st until i was 28 but i can cover them up i dont regret it but any tatooist that does it for someone under 18 should be shot
My daughter has had her tongue pierced at 17 is that legal.(Apart fron giving her a speech impediment there seem s very little point as it cant be seen!)
i know you can get temporary, that last for a couple of years,as the ink only penetrates a couple layers of skin. So that is always an option if your daughter is still adament at 18
My sneaky daughter got hers-without my knowledge-at 15 and16
now she wishes she didn't have some of them
