In answer to your 2nd question Station, yes that is how a blokes mind works. If you get him something romantic, he'll look at, arrange his face to a suitable expression and go "errr, that's lovely" before bunging it an a cupboard and forgetting about it.

I'd fo with Tony's idea, its quick (if you're lucky), costs nowt and should keep him sweet for a day or two.

I've done that to my hubby before - well just gone downstairs and watched tv not gone out

Cook him steak, chips, peas and onion rings. Rent a dvd...one of the Terminator films, Die Hard, The Transporter, Crank...any action film he has not seen. Get a bar of chocolate and some savoury nibbles. Let him watch "Match of the Day"......then round the evening off with a nice bj.
