What is the prize for becoming world champion?

Good question. I don't think there is one. At least, I've never heard of one. Getting a pay rise from £4 million to about £9 million might alleviate the problem , though.

There is no prze, the driver is paid by the team, now no doubt he would get a bonus for winning. All prize money for the races etc goes to the team.

Up to last week (before Jenson’s success) nine British drivers had taken the F1 title on a total of 12 occasions. However, the BBC trophy has been won by F1 drivers on only six occasions (not counting John Surtees in 1959, when he won the BBC trophy for his motor cycling achievements). Only three of those drivers (Jackie Stewart in 1973, Nigel Mansell in 1992 and Damon Hill in 1996) took the BBC prize in the same year as their F1 triumph.

Lewis was unfortunate enough to win his title in Olympic year, so the competition is understandably a litte tougher.

Since the since the BBC Personality competition was launched in 1954 there have been 14 Olympic years (when both the summer and winter Olympic games were held) and four years since 1994 when the Winter Olympics were held in between the summer games.

Up to 1992 (the last time both games were held in the same year) the BBC trophy has gone to an Olympic gold medal winner on all but three occasions – 1956 (Jim Laker), 1988 (Steve Davis) and 1992 (Nigel Mansell). Since then Olympic Gold medal winners have taken the BBC prize in every summer Olympic year except 1996 when Damon Hill took the prize.

So the F1 title by no means guarantees that the winner will be crowned BBC Sport personality, especially in Olympic year.

jenson will get a shiny number 1 on his car and his teams pit garage will be the first garage in the pit area, I think the team gets a lot of money as well. Im sure jenson will get advertising offers now as well as new sponsership deals for the team.

I think there is an awards do when the season is over where they present some trophies
