why do ponds appear more shallow than they really are?

because light is refracted as it goes through the air-water interface.
So it is diverted.

Things appear larger than they are under water, so the bottom seems closer than it is.

No, refraction does'nt make things appear larger at all, it just makes them appear closer to the surface.

I never said refraction makes things seem larger, I just said that things appear larger under water.  Read the answers properly.
