How do I stop the irritating pop up that appears EVERY time I click on an AB subject or look at answers posted by other users?

Use a popup stopper (and prevent further postings) or just minimise the first popup and surf away.

popupstopper by panicware [freeware]. Works well, currently stops all AB nags; just remember to hold down shift or Ctrl when you want to allow a popup, e.g. a Question Window, Answer Window etc, Once you figured how to use popupstopper, AB is a fun nonag site without complications though you could go further and get Analogx cookiewall [freeware] then you can choose which cookies to allow, on the fly.

All the ads on answerbank come from the same server. So you can edit your 'hosts' file to effectively block the ads server. Simply put in a line telling to your PC to look for the offending server at IP address 0.0.0.0 when it doesn't find it there it gives up and doesn't bother going to the www.

i'm sure you're correct anthomson but [coincidentally], making said host file was my very last action before my pc restarted and crashed so bad i had to format the drive. I'm 99% certain it was a coincidence, real culprit was a need for thermal compund, but now i won't touch host file with a bargepole. They're surely a good idea, but exept not for me :-)

I was amazed to see complaints about Popup ads on answerbank. I didn't even know they had any. We use the technique mentioned by anthomson which edits the hosts file to send IP addresses of known pop-up advertisers. Of the popup blocker programs we've found Proxomitron the best but it needs some computer knowledge to install it. Editing the hosts file is certainly the best way to go.

Point taken AB - and I have expressed my concerns about the site losing revenue in a previous posting.
However I can also understand why people hate the 'in-your-face' advertising techniques that are constantly invading our lives and inparticular our PC's.
Does AB condone techniques like; spyware, spam, and targeting children ? Do you have any editorial control of what adverts and techniques are used on your site.
I don't know if people would pay for a service like AB but I do believe that if we continue to let advertisers have free-run of the internet it will soon become unusable - which is bad for sites like AB, bad for the public and of course bad for the advertisers and thier clients.

I answer to the AB Editor, I think that popups are a negative way to produce revenue. I think the banner's you use at the top of the page are far more effective. Its a bit like me attaching my advert to a dog toilet when I post it through your letter box, I cant fail to notice it but its mere presence makes me more determined not to look at it or use the products it tries to promote. Banners do not distract me or annoy me. I think you should put a banner at the bottom of the thread as well
