When is it right to cross a cheque. I always cross them, but recently i sent a cheque to the City of Westerminster council to get married and they seemed a bit miffed when i asked them over the phone whether or not to cross it. Is it not proper ettiquette?

Assuming that you use pre-printed cheques from your Bank, they are usually crossed any way so there is no need to add your own.
Crossing cheques? I thought there is no need to do that any more.

I thought that the Banks had stopped issuing uncrossed cheques and now only issue crossed cheques, so there should be no need to cross a cheque as it already has the crosses printed on it, as andy hughes says.
Hi, it is correct that most banks these days offer pre-crossed cheques for security, so no need to add your own crossing.  Def not an ettiquette thing!!!!!!

Hi, My Cheque book is uncrossed. Im with the co-operatitve bank. My question still stands though, why would someone get funny about you asking whether or not to cross it?
The probably got funny because they don't understand. They're probably shall we say Thick
A crossed cheque is a cheque which is payable only through a collecting banker and not directly at the counter of the bank. Crossing ensures security to the holder of the cheque as only the collecting banker credits the proceeds to the account of the payee of the cheque.

However in case you are writing an bank's account number instead of a person's name, it need not be crossed as it cannot be en cashed over the counter and will only be transferred to account number given in the cheque. Media URL: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crossing_of_cheques
