In my experience, it means they know who to contact to get a bunce or commision, but then, having been screwed into getting something that wasn't really right for me, I'm sceptical.

I guess it's from cockney rhyming slang - Merchant Banker

Now I get it I understand rhyming slang so why not say merchant banker. Annie when you said you were going for a Fosters I thought you were hitting the lager. It seems I have a lot to learn.
