installing a multifuel stove

My husband has just installed a multifuel stove to our 1930's semi, the chimney is an existing one & has been used as an open fire with a log basket ,burning logs & coal for about 15 years now,but as the cost of gas central heating has risen so much we thought it would be economical to change ,.The only problem being that we are not going to put a full flu liner in,but have been told that we could put in a "shelf" made out of fireproof substance called a "registration plate".we know that we have to have access to clean the chimney ,but i've been reading things warning me about toxic gasses & tar build up. as we obiously dont want the house to catch on fire or be poisened in our sleep does anyone have any advice or can tell us how to install one of these plates. we have friends who have a multifuel stove & they dont seem to have any trouble just having one of these plates .Any help & I would be Grateful thanks.

I guess you know that with wood burning, it's even more important to have the flue swept every year at least. The resin in wood results in a lot of "condensate" running down the flue. If it builds up, it can easily result in a chimney fire.
A "register" plate .............. that's the one........... one way of doing it (DIY) ......... steel angle fixed to the inside of the flue.on all four sides as a frame............... say 9 or 12mm thick fireproof board (Masterboard or similar) dropped into the angle iron frame .............. with a circle cut out for the flue pipe.......... try a bit of Googling ............. it's all out there somewhere.................. oh, and make it removable for flue sweeping

Thanks "the builder" sorry for delay in replying but we were seeing how we got on before seeking more advice .My husband has put up the brackets inside the chimney & as there isnt enough room to fix a trap door or opening plate for chimney sweeping someone recomended using 2 pieces edge to edge around the flue pipe (sealed ) but we could remove 1 side to sweep the chimney.(have taken templates to replace if it breaks on removal) As you know we are not using a liner ,now i've had so many reports saying it 's not safe & we'll be poisened if we close the fire down at night & open the vents in the morning. Now I'm paranoid that it's not safe to have just a registation plate (all sealed with fire cement)I don't want to be responsible for the fumes going through the wall into next door either .Now we wish we'd just kept the open fire ,far less dangerous.Some people have said that there's is fine with just the plate, Please tell me that it is ok & we wont all die in our beds.(we will have a vent in the floor in the room where the fire is as my husband says he could put one in easily (there is one in the ajoining room(it's a through room ,the centre wall has been removed years ago).Sorry its such a long reply but we need to be sure .Thanks
