The Addams family are characters from different  Hammer horror movies put together as a family. I know Morticia is a vampire, Lurch is Frankenstein, Grandmama is a witch. The rest I'm not so sure.

ok so you have matched 3 characters yet youre stuck for 6 characters... may i suggest that in fact the family is not based on movie characters, but rather 'horror' entities ?!

Well it's obvious they are derive horror movies and I'm curious where the rest came from.

The Addams Family first appeared in the New Yorker magazine in 1938, a cartoon drawn by Charles Addams. Later the cartoons were syndicated worldwide and appeared in many newspapers.

The first Hammer Horror film was made in 1953 and of course the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley appeared in 1818.

So who is basing what on whom?

I think Famous5 has the correct answer.

Charles Addams admitted,not long before he died,that he had based his characters on his OWN family;so just what were they like?Well, he drew them as HE saw them.

They certainly were not based on Hammer horror movies,but on Horror characters in general.The only ones I can say were definite were Morticia(A Vampire,maybe) and Lurch(Frankenstein,possibly)but as oligopoly says these two are Horror "entities".The other characters just sprung from Charles Addams imagination(and boy,what an imagination!)

BTW,when I was young,I used to live near the Lurch from the TV series,as he was living in the UK, he was a very nice guy.

I think this is all going a bit off tack here,as Famous5 says,these characters were first drawn in 1938,so other characters were probably based on them, and not vice versa!

Pugsley is not a werewolf type ann h. That boy is in the Munsters. I always thought that Lurch was a zombie. "Thing" was never seen,just its hand, unlike the film where a hand is seen scuttling around.

I think you are getting them confused with The Munsters.

It was The Munsters that were based on Universal Studios Monster Hall of Fame.

Herman was based on Frankenstien's Monster, Grandpa on Dracula and Eddie the son, was based on the Wolfman.
