MM Links Solutions November 2009 [Week 1]

Well, it didn’t take the snipers long to get me in their sights! I thought that the theme: “The Fifth (letter) of NoveMber”, clued as the letter M would distract one or two of you ~ but not so! My account of mining, working generally, the sectarian divide and my boyhood nights spent under candle power would be my undoing. Under a thinly disguised pseudonym (or for Speccie addicts ~ a thinly disguised “dumpynose) of “King Krophta”, I went for the following links:

Fire DAMP
Work ETHIC
Roman CATHOLIC
Candle POWER

Several regulars reaped a bumper harvest of points.

It took only the fourth entrant, who chanced her arm with WORK ETHIC and ROMAN CATHOLIC for FOUR POINTS, to start the ball rolling! It was my favourite, Dustybun! I always say that she’s a clever cookie (pun) and I am NEVER surprised when she scores well! (Pinocchio’s nose has just grown four inches) Seriously though, it may have taken Dustybun a couple of years to get the hang of this game, but the girl’s now going crazy!

There followed beejay1124, grannydi and Christiana in quick succession each with one of these hits for Two Points, before miss meg traced signs of FIRE DAMP for a brand new link word and TWO more POINTS. Not wishing to be eclipsed by Dustybun, in came the “Rottweiler from Reddish” as the very next entrant to echo the earlier Four Point success ~ same two words and within time!

However, the best was yet to come! Feigning confusion with the words: “No idea really, but I’ll try”, tearinghair proceeded to reel off no fewer than three hits ~ INCLUDING the last link word, CANDLE POWER for a massive SIX POINTS. It has been quite some time when someone has scored Six Points (the last person to do so was, I believe, Jools). So with no further ado, I nominate tearinghair as the undisputed “Hot Shot of the Week”!
*** Let trumpets sound and canons roar ***
*** Let crowds go wild and yell “Encore!” ***

This memorable event marked the end of bonus points, with patchett, seekeerz, Jools, joto and twix123 picking up single hits for One Point. Amongst these, I found the steadfast Strix (ex-champion exactly one year ago) with an impressive performance of TWO hits scoring a total of Two Points

The League Table after this first week is:

Next week, my personal saga will continue to the point that I eventually become Head of a Mathematics Unit in an English University!
