Yes agreed don1 - the sculptor is indeed NOGUCHI but his christian name is ISAMU rather than HIDEYO as stated in the Tlegraph. HIDEYO NOGUCHI, as cheshunt says, was a bacteriologist. The Telegraph has erred (not for the first time!)

I dont buy newspapers biley so I can only go off what posters on AB tell us, I didnt know about the Hideyo part of the question.

I agree Biley.Nowhere can I find a reference that Hideyo Noguchi was a sculptor.He was a bacteriologist.Isama Hideyo was a sculptor.
You are quite right ..I think DT has erred yet again.

The American sculptor is Isamu Noguchi of course and not Hideyo Noguchi -- a Japanese bacteriologist. You've obviously noticed the error and solved the clue, but I'm sorry to have led you up this Japanese garden path.
