The only word I know for life is Leben.

You are quite right dOgsbOdy ,the German word for life is Leben.I think the clue is worded wrongly and it should be the Greek name meaning life which is Zoe.But it is only a three letter clue and nothing but Zoe fits.Another slip up by the DT?

Thanks to both of you.  Shaney, I've got 4D as eponymy which fits organdy but not organza???  German for life is indeed leben, another possibility is Eve ??

shaneystar, I don't think the DT has made a mistake.  My reading of the clue is that the name is German.  The clue does not state that it means 'life' in German.

I came to England as a baby and have British nationality but my family are from Heiligenhaus near Duesseldorf.I still have family there and my husband is German.We are of course bi-lingual and go over there quite a lot.My son's Godfather was in the Bundeswehr,bomb diposal.He is retired now though.
Germany is a lovely country.I worked there for a while in the 70's in the Kaufhof in D.dorf.I loved it and worked with very nice people.Better not chat on or will be removed to Chatterbank!!
