Optical illusions

Just StumbleUpon'd this one http://www.scientific...BallShapiroIC2009.swf which I haven't seen before.

A "spinning" ball drops vertically but if you look to one side it seems to travel to the left - there's a blue dot on the right as a guide but it doesn't matter if you look to the left side instead. And if you change the settings then... (try it yourself).

There's a lot of age-old optical illusions around but what others are there that a computer can show for which there is no equivalent printed version?

That's really interesting. to answer the question, there's a link on that page bottom right which leads to more illusions of the same type.

It's strange how the direction of strobing leads to the perception of motion in that direction no matter which side of the ball at which you are looking, if you make the strobing vertical then the ball seems to descend more slowly, which obviously can't be happening.

Perhaps it is apt that a thread regarding perception includes a reply which I perceived to be sarcastic (i.e. thanks for the link that leads to a page that only contains a couple of eyeball based novelty effects).
