Where's Wally/Waldo?

I know that the character series 'Where's Wally?' was created by a British author, but I'm curious as to why it was changed to 'Where's Waldo?' when marketed in America? Does anyone know why? Thanks!

"Wally" has a different name in many countries - usually the local equivalent of Wally.
