Working with young people
2 Answers
Hi there,
Im really interested in working with young people as an advisor or counsellor of some kind. I've been to university and got a degree but need NVQs to be able to do this kind of work. I've looked at the Connexions website and am interested in becoming a personal advisor but need experience of working with young people. I know there are housing organisations specially for young people and youth services but how do I go about finding any vacancies available. I know some schemes include training for qualfications but if not I would try and do it in my spare time outside work. If anyone could help me with any advice I'd really appreciate it. Thank you.

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.I suspect that much of the information at this web site is already familiar to you:
http://www.learndirect-advice.co.uk/helpwithyourcareer/j obprofiles/profiles/profile1100/
The key piece of information from that site seems to be this:
"A background in careers advice and guidance, youth work, education, youth justice or social work is particularly useful".
Looking at which of those areas might offer you the best (and quickest) path to your ultimate career aim, I would suggest 'youth work'. This took me here:
http://www.learndirect-advice.co.uk/helpwithyourcareer/j obprofiles/profiles/profile300/
As well as reading the information on that page, I suggest that you check out some of the links (particularly, perhaps, the one for the National Youth Agency).
Hoping this helps,
Chris
