Oh boy, just seen where this one is going. Very nearly finished, but I reckon there's going to be a fair bit of drawing to do, which can wait until tomorrow!
Enjoyable diversion, without being too testing.

Nice diverting puzzle ... but ...

...is anyone apart from me troubled by the solution to 11dn - if I'm right it's not in Chambers & googling isn't very reassuring ?

Sunny-dave, putting the answer into Chambers online takes you to the singular version, without saying that the answer is the plural. My classics teacher wife assures me that these are the matching singular/plural forms.

Like most people I got the theme after solving a) which was the first thing I looked at. However the thematic items are still giving me some trouble. I can't work out c) m) or n) as yet. I will doubtless find the latter two by tedious studying of the grid, but I'm not so sure about c).

(c) was the last one I deduced too.

If you've got all the others in Set 1, then you know where it starts and the length. Head W and then SW2 then NW.

I too had the problem with too few cells. x-word-fan - your alternative has the added advantage that it prevents two Set 1 answers from running together, which had made me slightly uneasy.

Can anyone help me justify 5d or 10d? Surely the penultimate letter of 10d is wrong, but it fits with18a and with a thematic clue. But I can't find the answer in Chambers.

Also, must the drawing be really explicit?

Shelouse - 10d not in Chambers - try googling your answer with the first word of the clue

Teuchter2: (m) the amswer is the second half of a six letter word. The first part of the clue defines the first half of the longer word.

I still think there is an extra Set 2 item - top centre, straight up, 3 letter abbreviation. Any "Sam"s out there?

shelouse - not sure if you're still trying to justify your answer for 5dn but, if so, think of a 4-letter word for 'satisfy'

A fair enough puzzle, and obviously quite solvable. But did anyone else get irritated by the number of unchecked squares. In the "main" bit, without the thematic clues, 65/144 were unchecked. Now i realise that a large proportion of those were subsequently checked. But, as I say, i did find it an irritant.

My first attempt at one since 4056 - quite enjoyable and I get to use my crayons. I too guessed the theme after getting (h) which helped, but not knowing the correct letter in the definitions did mean quite a slow grid fill. I was left with (l) at the end but with great relief I found it fairly promptly as it was in a good place to spot if checking through the grid for possible solutions!
