In social ethics, we were having a discussion on whether the class thinks that the standard punishments that this countrry has for each crime is fair or not. Whic lead to discussing the prison system.
Almost all of agreed that prisons should be stricter (no tv's/pool tables ect.) and that so the good honest tax payer has to pay as little as possible, the criminal has to pay for their stay. Plus, if it turns out after years, that someone confesses or new evidence is found, they are then given their money back as some compensation for being wrongly inprisoned.
Who agrees this would work?
If the person doesn't pay, bayliffs will be sent round or their families benefits (if on any) would be cut until such time that enough money has been saved - is what someone said to do if they won't/ can't pay.
mollykins im just saying what i would do in my post, being a law abiding citizen it has come to the point where i feel very stongly about this. Fed up paying my tax so it gets used up pampering those who dont live by the law,. Dont think for a second wizard that ive had an easy life or summat cos i can tell u i aint. But i do have morals and respect which is summat this country is sadly lacking.
And if we werent wasting money on these holiday camps we could better look after those in need such as the aforementioned mentally ill and genuine homeless. Even the monies saved on legal aid, court proceedings. police, witness payments, parole officers etc would contribute immensley.
The criminal will not be able to pay for his stay because they will not have a job, and it is likely they won't have the financial assets to pay for this stay.
Why should the relatives of criminals be forced to pay for the criminal's stay when they have not done anything wrong? If bayliffs took thier benefits then what are they supposed to live on? Unworkable plan obviously.
The punishment of prison does not just end when the sentence is served. They will have a life long crimninal record which in many cases will stop them from gaining future employment if the offence committed is one that may cause the safety of other employees cause for concern. The long term implications of a criminal record can be devastating for people, this is often over looked.
Prison is also meant to rehabilitate people. Of course they should be given basic meals and looked after, as cheaply as possible, yes, but the point is that they have had thier freedom taken from then already.
Put youself in their shoes and think about not being able to do anything you would normally do. Prison is a tough place.
if money was saved on legal aid (to allow for a fair trial for which they are entitled to), court proceedings, police, witness payments, parole officers then the country would be flooded of criminals and none would see punsihment.
They are not holiday camps! Police are locked up, they have no freddom, they cannot do what they want to do for a set period of time. This is not a holiday camp, or if it was then you were ripped off haha.
