Mice in the house - grrrr!

I live in an oldish bungalow with many, many nooks and holes (under skirting etc) for mice to enter.
Now that the weather has changed, we have been properly invaded.
The interesting thing is that when we have set traps before, we were guaranteed to catch as many mice as were hungry and coming into the house, however we still have the same traps set but watch mice run right past them!
What the hell is going on?!
Is it possible that mice come into our houses for shelter alone and not food? If so, how do I stop them running across my living room (and kitchen) floor?

I could get a pest expert in but are they going to tell me anything different re setting traps etc?

madmaggot - when you say that you have had to reluctantly use bait, what do you mean by that? What kind of bait and why reluctantly?

Shivvy, we got the bait from our local farmers store.
I say reluctantly because I really don't like the idea of poisoning anything. I don't even kill the wood lice that invade our porch, I just put them outside! But it got that we had so many mice this year that it is not hygienic, something had to be done. We don't put it anywhere except in the roofspace because I can be sure that nothing else will take it by mistake. My OH puts traps in his shed, he uses cheese, they seem to go for strong cheese!

Ah, got you now madmaggot. I agree and don't fancy using poison either.. . . However I think I might have to think about it now. Am I right in saying that when they are poisoned, they leave the house to look for water? I don't want them dying in the house.

PS - why was noknowledges answer removed? It was only a harmless cartoon of mice.
