My parents were, understandably, very worried because of the escalation of the cold war and the building of the Berlin Wall. I can remember being taken to see part of the border, the sentry towers and the mined stretch of no-man's land and I'm sure I can remember also seeing houses which formed part of the border. My question is, could I have seen that? Looking at a map of the border it seems to me that it would have been a very long journey from Bielefeld to the border and surely we couldn't have gone into East Germany to see the wall round Berlin, which is where houses were part of the wall?
